Buenos Aires Governor Daniel Scioli called on the Mauricio Macri administration to start talks in a move to set restrictions to the closing times of night clubs in both districts, after the City showed its reluctance to follow the steps of the province.

"I'm concerned that the City will not join the policy of closing times set by the province," Scioli told reporters on a local radio. The bill has already been passed by the provincial Upper House and expects a fast approval in the legislature.

The bill would order night clubs and bars to close at 5:30am, and will ban the sale of alcohol after 4:30am in a move to tackle growing violence.

Scioli has criticized the City government for failing to join the initiative of the province, which "has more to do with the political intention of not following the province" than the real effects of the law.

"The policy won't work if the discotheques continue open in the city after they close in the province," Scioli said.

A similar policy to close bars and night clubs was adopted by former Buenos Aires governor Eduardo Duhalde in the late nineties, but it failed to reach its goals as "clubbers" headed to the capital after the 3am curfew.

Scioli meanwhile backed the efforts of the province to tighten controls on discotheques, which, Scioli said, led the government to close down some 100 night clubs in the recent months.

"This is a symbol of what we're looking in these times, a healthy youth that has its space for fun, but curbing the excesses of alcohol," Scioli added.
