This week at the movies
No Hollywood blockbuster this week! Two local productions, a French movie, a Uruguayan/French documentary and a German/Italian release are out in BA. For strictly English speakers, the UK thriller WAZ was also released.
• VILE ROMANCE. Vil romance is a deep exploration of the often-ignored side of same-sex politics. But, in spite of its mercilessly realistic view of life stripped down to its bare bones, Vil romance is simply a love story. (Argentina 2009, in Spanish). • LOS ANGELES. The closing of the railway transformed the Buenos Aires village of Los Angeles into a ghost town. Some people refuse to leave, whereas others migrate to BA City hoping to get new jobs, reconnect with old flings and find their place under the sun. • I'VE COME FROM A PLANE THAT CRASHED ON THE MOUNTAINS (LA SOCIEDAD DE LA NIEVE). In 1972, a plane transporting a young Uruguayan rugby team crashed in the Andes en route to Chile. Some passengers survived the crash, but the weeks they later spent on the mountain proved a much harsher ordeal. This pseudo-documentary gathers testimonies from all 16 survivors about the event that changed their lives forever. • BIENVENUE CHEZ LES CH'TIS (BIENVENIDOS AL PAIS DE LA LOCURA). A comedy that broke all audience records in its native France and had Argentines in stitches as the closer film for this year’s Pantalla Pinamar film fest. The film tells the story of a mail clerk sent to a remote village in northern France, where locals talk and behave in most peculiar ways. (France, 2008, in French). Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgard (Angels & Demons) plays a tough cop on the hunt for a serial killer who offers his victims a choice – he either kills them or one of their loved ones. • ALLE ANDEREN (ENTRE NOSOTROS). On the surface, Chris and Gitti are madly in love and happily holidaying in Sardinia, but an undercurrent of secret rituals, silly habits, unfulfilled wishes and power struggles tenses up their apparent paradise. A winner at several international film festivals.
