After media bill vote
UCR sues Senator Sánchez on bribery charges
Radical party (UCR) head Gerardo Morales today filed a lawsuit against Senator for Corrientes, Dora Sánchez, charging her of accepting bribes in return for voting in favour of the Media Bill. The report was made after the latter admitted in different interviews that she endorsed the controversial bill because the Government promised funds for her province.
In his request, Morales asks the court to hear former President Nestór Kirchner, Cabinet Chief Anibal Fernández and Vice-President Cobos. Sánchez held a meeting with Cobos, after which the Vice-President said she told him that she voted in favour of the bill for the aforementioned reasons.
"This is a very serious matter," Morales said. "It is not only about Sanchez's behaviour, but also about the Government's way of pressuring lawmakers," he added, lamenting the increasing number of lawmakers who "truly believe one thing but end up voting for the other." The Jujuy Senator filed the lawsuit this morning to speed up a judicial investigation into the case.
Morales quoted the Interamerican anti-corruption convention, which punishes lawmakers who decide their votes in return for personal benefits or goods for their jurisdictions.
During the Media Bill debate in the Senate on Saturday morning (in a session that started on Friday afternoon), some senators of the ruling party who had previously shown their opposition to the bill voted in favour of it, including Sánchez and Guillermo Jenefes.
Lawmakers also reported pressures from the government. Senator Dora Sánchez clearly stated she voted differently because Corrientes Governor told her so.
Ricardo Monner Sanz, an independent lawyer working for an independent anti-corruption NGO also filed a lawsuit against Sanchez before another Federal Court in the City of Buenos Aires.
