Peres became President in 2007
Mideast conflict on agenda for Israel's Shimon Peres
Israeli Ambassador to Argentina confirmed that Israeli President Shimon Peres will be visiting the country during a trip to Argentina and Brazil, "accompanied by businessmen and ministers that have yet to be announced."
During his stay in the region, Peres will hold meetings with Latin American politicians.
Ambassador Daniel Gazit said that the date has not yet been made known due to "security reasons," but did say that the political agenda includes "the Middle Eastern conflict, the threats in Iran and topics dealing with scientific investigation, along with economic and political development."
Gazit said that "Peres will meet with President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and will likely meet with Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana."
He added that the meetings with other members of the Argentine government depends on "how the Israeli delegation is organized, and this has not yet been confirmed."
When speaking about Iran, Gazit explained that the ties between that country and Latin America would be a topic of discusión for both the Argentine and Brazilian presidents because of the "threat" of the "Iranian influence in terms of its ideology of hate and its intention to arm itself with nuclear weapons and what that means for the international community."
Shimon Peres was Prime Minister for two terms and Foreign Minister for three. In 2007, he became President of Israel, thus receiving from the Israeli Parliament the highest possible institutional post.
