Dow hits 2009 closing high on earnings optimism
US stocks climbed, with the Dow hitting a closing high for 2009, as investors anticipated positive news from next week's key earnings reports and bullish broker comments boosted tech shares.
The Dow Jones industrial average ended up 78.1 points, or 0.8 percent, at 9,864.94. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index gained 6 points, or 0.5 percent, to 1,071.49. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 15.3 points, or 0.7 percent, to 2,139.28.
European equities edged lower, with the key index hovering around 1,000 points, as weaker miners offset telecom shares that rose after Telefonica offered bigger-than-expected dividends.
At 0831 GMT, the FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares was 0.1 percent lower at 999.85 points after rising 1.3 percent in the previous session. The benchmark index is up 20 percent this year and has surged 54 percent since hitting a record low in early March.Japan's Nikkei average closed above 10,000 for the first time in a week, with exporters climbing on a slightly weaker yen, while Fast Retailing gained after forecasting a record profit for this business year.
The benchmark Nikkei gained 1.9 percent or 183.9 points to 10,016.39, its highest finish since Sept. 30.
The broader Topix climbed 1.2 percent to 897.83.
