For Spanish speakers, the much awaited new Pedro Almodóvar movie is out in the Buenos Aires theatres. An argentine production and three US movies are also out.

• LOS ABRAZOS ROTOS (Broken Embraces). The much-awaited Almodóvar film rounding out his own oeuvre. Almodóvar, undoubtedly Spain's greatest living auteur, has for some undivulged reason chosen to look back on his personal and cinematic life, both intersecting and crossing paths constantly. (Spain, 2009). In Spanish. Written and directed by: Pedro Almodóvar. With: Penélope Cruz, Lluis Homar, José Luis Gómez, Blanca Portillo, Lola Dueñas. Distributed by Sony Pictures Classic, Focus Features and El Deseo. NR. Running Time: 128 minutes.

• MAREA DE ARENA. Pathologically obsessive and self-centred, a photographer moves from Buenos Aires down to barren Patagonia, taking along with him his ex wife and their son. Attempting to make a new start, he strives to find a second chance in life, even a new partner. The breathtaking landscapes of Patagonia serve as background for this story in which visuals play a key role. (Mexico/Argentina, 2009). In Spanish. Written and directed by: Gustavo Montiel Pagés. With: Daniel Kuzniecka, Damián Alcázar, Carmen Beato, Edurne Ferrer. Distributed by Primer Plano. NC13. PG. Running time: 92 minutes.

• JENNIFER’S BODY (Diabólica tentación). Written by Diablo Cody, who co-authored the acclaimed Juno, Jennifer’s Body is about a small-town girl possessed by a ravenous demon who pushes the girl to seduce men to then swallow them down for dinner. Not a truly horror film, but rather a giallo, as the action is framed in a pop milieu in which horror is seen through the veil of comedy. (US, 2009, in English with Spanish-language subtitles). Directed by: Karyn Kusama. With: Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried, Johnny Simmons, Adam Brody, Sal Cortez, Ryan Levine. Distributed by Fox. NC16. Running time: 92 minutes.

• CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS (Lluvia de hamburguesas). A man, especially a nerdy one, will go to any extent to lure the girl of his dreams. This man happens to be an inventor — a weatherman, really — who uses his skills to have food rain down from the sky. But what at first looks like manna eventually turns into a nightmare. (US, 2009). In English with Spanish-language subtitles, and also, in the afternoon, dubbed into Spanish.  Directed by: Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Written by: Phil Lord and Chris Miller, based on a book by Judi Barrett and Ron Barrett. English-language voiceovers: Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Andy Samberg, Bruce Campbell, Mr. T. Scope format. Prints in 35mm, 3D, and Imax. Distributed by Columbia. NR. Running time: 91 minutes.

• STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGEND OF CHUN-LI (Street Fighter: la leyenda). First an electronic game, then a popular movie saga, this Street Fighter focuses on a little girl who unexpectedly meets an ex convict. The man has good intentions, though, for he offers his services to find the girl’s father, kidnapped ten years ago. (Canada/India/US/Japan, 2009, in English with Spanish-language subtitles). Directed by: Andrzej Bartkowiak. Adapted for the screen by: Justin Marks. With: Kristin Kreuk, Chris Klein, Neal McDonough, Robin Shou, Moon Bloodgood, Josie Ho. Distributed by Distribution Company. NC13. Running time: 96 minutes.
