Comfer rejects Cablevisión - Multicanal merger

The government’s trustee in the Comfer broadcasting committee, Gabriel Mariotto, rejected a request of Cablevisión to join operations with Multicanal, both managed by Clarín Group.

The news was confirmed by Mariotto during a hearing of three parliamentary committees debating the implications of government-sponsored Broadcasting Bill (see related story).

“Before I came here, I signed the resolution rejecting a request made by Cablevisión to operate jointly with Multicanal,” said Mariotto. He said the measure aimed at “countering a dominant position in the market.”

Only days ago, the Supreme Court had endorsed a ruling authorizing the merger of both companies, and dismissed charges of monopoly.

“The lack of tenders (for broadcasting permits) and the monopoly in soccer broadcasting have caused a monopoly in cable distribution. This way, no new cable operators could emerge and those who had an important contract, such as soccer broadcasting, distributed the signals among the companies of their holdings” said Mariotto substantiating his decision.
